42 year old mother Christy Sheats lived with her husband, Jason, and two daughters, Madison (17) and Taylor (22) in 2016. On the surface, Christy appeared as an adoring mother who innocently boasted about her girls on her social media. She posted appreciation posts on Daughter’s Day and her daughters returned the favor on Mother’s Day. Taylor posted, “Mom, you are so selfless, as you always put our whole family before yourself and never ask for anything in return. You’re so kind and loving, as you always remind us of just how much you care and how proud you are of everything we do. You’re so intelligent and fun to be around because I feel like I can talk to you for forever now about anything.”

Social media users have the ability to filter out what they post. You will rarely see someone publish the negative aspects of their life, and the same could be said for the Sheats family.

The relationship between Christy and her husband, Jason, had ultimately been spiraling for the past few years. Christy’s mental health declined after her grandfather passed away because that was her main parental figure throughout her life. Jason explained that once Christy’s grandfather passed, the woman he initially knew, loved, and married had fizzled away. She transformed into an irritable, unrecognizable person as she grieved. Adding more pain to her life, Christy lost her mother two months after her grandfather — stripping away everyone she loved one by one. Due to Christy’s mental health issues, officers responded to 14 calls from the household since 2012. Even though she sought treatment at three different facilities, the help never lasted long-term enough to offer Christy any comfort.

In addition to Christy’s mental health issues, a constant issue in the family was Taylor’s relationship with her fiancé Juan. Christy didn’t approve of the engagement and insisted that it not proceed further, but Taylor stood her ground about her future.

On June 24th, 2016, it was Jason Sheats’ birthday and three days before Taylor’s wedding. Christy attempted to demand they ground Taylor and forbid her from seeing her fiancé, but as a supportive father, Jason refused to support this plan. He stated that their daughter was old enough to make her own choices and it was inappropriate to ground her from her fiance. At this point, Jason was overwhelmed with Christy’s argumentative tendencies lately and told her, “this is the birthday that you are going to ruin.”

Around 5:00pm, Christy called a family meeting in their living room. Jason was under the impression that she was going to tell the girls that they were divorcing, but it turned into something much more graphic and violent. Apparently, Christy wanted a genuine apology from Jason for refusing to side with her over Taylor’s relationship, but he refused to do so. Filled with anger and feelings of betrayal, Christy reached under the couch cushion and angrily pulled out her pistol. She was able to acquire the gun from her grandfather because she was denied legal possession of a firearm in the state of Texas.

Christy waved the gun around as Jason pleaded and begged to leave the girls unharmed. “Just shoot yourself. Make it easy on all of us, just shoot yourself”, Jason said. Christy’s coldhearted response consisted of saying she wanted to make him suffer.

Madison managed to make a call to 911 during this time:

CHRISTY: I told you..

JASON: Please forgive me, I’m sorry.

THE GIRLS: Wait please don’t shoot. Don’t do it. Please don’t do it.

JASON: I promise you, whatever you want, I’ll …

Suddenly, the 911 call dropped. A few seconds later, Taylor managed to call 911 from her phone, but the operator could only hear a loud cluster of screaming.

During this time, Christy shot her younger daughter, Madison, directly in the neck before attempting to turn the gun on Taylor. Quickly acting as a protective father, Jason rushed around the couch to help his daughters escape through the front door while Christy continued to fire 3 more shots in their direction. She specifically made sure to avoid Jason while aiming the firearm. Madison tried her best to escape from the gunfire and find safety in the street, but she collapsed and died from her injuries to her neck. A neighbor who was watching from the window called operators to give them a play by play of the events.

Taylor attempted to run away as she bolted down the neighborhood street, but she tripped after being shot in the head twice. In a shocking turn of events, Christy hovered over her and tried to fire the gun again, but it was out of bullets. “She’s trying to shoot again. She don’t have anymore bullets”, the neighbor said as his voice shook.

The angry mother returned in the house and reloaded her gun before walking back outside and shooting her older daughter two more times: once in the head and once in the back. “She shot her again. She shot her again…She shot her from the back. It doesn’t look like she’s moving anymore.” The 911 operator apologized saying, “I’m sorry you had to see that sir.”

Police rushed toward their neighborhood and arrived as Christy fired the final bullet into Taylor’s limp body. Officers held her at gunpoint and demanded her to drop her weapon, but in the midst of her high emotions, she refused to comply. Authorities were left with the decision to fire in Christy’s direction, striking her in the chest and immediately killing her. The few minutes of horror were finally put to an end, but Jason Sheats would never be able to celebrate his birthday in the same manner again.

Jason stands by the fact that Christy shot his two daughters and not him because it was spiteful revenge. She wanted him to carry debilitating emotional pain with him forever. “I have nothing good to say about her. Nobody who loves her children can do that to her children,” he told Dr. Oz. Despite his lingering anger toward his wife, he said he relied on his faith to pull him through the powerful grief.
